Born in Passopisciaro, Giuseppi Russo honors his father Girolamo with the name of his Azienda Agricola, who only sold his grapes on the side while raising his family by selling coal. Giuseppi took over in 2004, just as the renaissance in Sicilian winemaking was taking place, and he works his 18 hectares of up to 100 year old, bush trained Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappucio organically, as his father did, at elevations reaching 800 meters on the north slope of Mt. Etna. “A’ Rina” means sand in the local dialect, a nod to the soil’s composition of volcanic sands. After hand harvesting, the grapes ferment spontaneously in small bins before aging for 12 months in 2600L Slavonian oak barrels and concrete, with a further 6 months in the bottle before release
